About the Author:

Gabrielle Union is an actress, executive producer, activist, best-selling author and most recently, a Time100 cover honoree. Union formed her production shingle “I’ll Have Another” in 2018 with the goal of telling stories that center marginalized communities with their specific point of views in an authentic manner. In August of 2020, she relaunched her haircare brand “Flawless by Gabrielle Union” for women with textured hair. The new and improved collection includes an array of options, affordably priced between $4 - $10, that empowers consumers to customize a regimen specific to their texture and style preferences. About the Book

Witty and bold, Afro-Latina Adiba grew up in survival mode. Her sometimes complicated relationship with her strong-willed, vibrant, religious mother marked her views of mothering and love. When a chance encounter with a tall-ish, brown-skinned brotha at Ruby Tuesday's right before closing time collided with a Jill Scott song and the right time of the month, Adiba found herself unexpectedly pregnant. She also found herself unexpectedly falling into the same relationship patterns of the matriarchs before her-the ones she swore she'd never end up in.

Mom to a new baby with high medical needs and a slew of hardships that just didn't seem to quit, she set out on a reckoning that was just as generational as it was personal. Along the way, Adiba never loses her heart or her humor. This is a true love story, but the kind about a woman loving herself enough to change the course of her life for herself, her child, and the women after her as well as before. About the Author

Adiba Nelson writes about inclusion and her life as a Black mother, woman, and daughter. She wrote her 2013 children’s book, Meet ClaraBelle Blue, after searching fruitlessly for a children’s book that adequately and appropriately represented her Afro-Latinx daughter with special needs. The subject of the Emmy Award– winning documentary The Full Nelson, Adiba is a highly acclaimed speaker and in 2017 delivered a TEDx talk to a sold out house on what to do when life throws you a curveball. As the curveballs keep coming, Nelson continues to write.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Carrie R. Moore’s fiction has appeared in One Story, New England Review, The Sewanee Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and other publications. A recipient of the Keene Prize and the inaugural writer-in-residence at the Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat, she earned her MFA at the Michener Center for Writers. Born in Georgia, she currently resides in Texas with her husband.

Juan Fernando Villagómez is a writer from Houston, TX. His work can be found in Texas Monthly, American Short Fiction, The Cincinnati Review, Ghost City Press, and is forthcoming in The Masters Review. He is a graduate of the New Writers Project at The University of Texas. His writing has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and has received support from the James A. Michener Center for Writers, Willapa Bay Artist Residency, Community of Writers, and Sewanee Writers Conference. He lives with his dog, Abba and two cats, Brick and Ghost..

Join Kindred Stories for our first-ever Hair Party! Black caregivers doing a child's hair before the start of a new week is a cornerstone in so many Black homes.  At this event, we'll celebrate this ritual and Black Hair in all its forms. Come celebrate and build community with us! 

Parents and caregivers are invited to bring their little ones to play and style their hair for the new week in the Reading Garden at Kindred Stories.

Everyone is invited to bring products for the Product Swap.  There will also be product samples from Uncle Funky's Daughter, our sponsor.

Additional Information: 

You are more than welcome to bring your hair supplies to the store and style your little one's hair in our Reading Garden.  Rubber bands, barrettes, and other accessories will be available but please bring your own combs, brushes, and clips.

Please bring a picnic blanket for your crew.  There will also be book, games, and other activities to keep your little ones busy during the event.

ABOUT THE SPELLING BEE 

Contestants will be asked to spell words that speak to the theme of Black History Month, including slang and AAVE, over the course of four rounds. If you misspell the word, you are out!  As the words get harder, you might be able to Phone a Friend or Battle to earn your place back into the competition. Fun and music-filled, this event is for folks looking for something BLACKITY BLACK to do on a Sunday night! 

Be mindful that you don't have to participate in the Bee. We definitely need an audience!

Inspired by the work featured in Hew Locke: Passages, on view at the
Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this summer, this free two-part generative
poetry workshop invites participants to engage in the wonder of ekphrasis.  Translated from Greek, ekphrasis simply means “description.” In this
workshop, writers use this poetic mode to depict what is seen in the
exhibition by writing original poems based on Locke’s work.

Participants will investigate visual tools used by the artist such as color,
pattern, and texture to explore how these how these concepts lend
themselves to poetic devices such as imagery, rhythm, repetition, mood,
and voice. Attendees will use their imagination to connect a variety of
narratives to Locke’s artwork.

The goal of this workshop is for youth, adults, and seniors to connect with
art in a way that enlivens their roles as viewers and co-artists.

This is a two-part workshop led by El Williams.  Please plan to attend both sessions.
