PRE-ORDER: Teret Teret: A Novel
PRE-ORDER: Teret Teret: A Novel
$30.00A bold and singularly funny novel about a young Ethiopian American woman whose twenty-first-century life collides spectacularly with Ethiopian legends that she knows can’t possibly be real, and yet...
“Remember when we were children The storyteller would shout, Teret teret, meaning a tale, a tale, and we would yell back Yelam beret! We didn’t know this meant a cow’s house, just that it rhymed. And then the story would begin.”
Belaynesh Tessema, an Ethiopian American journalist working at the independent travel magazine aptly named Trivial Pursuits, isn’t exactly pleased when her overbearing boss insists she travel to Washington, DC, to cover a story about a newly incorporated, all-Ethiopian town. When she starts packing to leave, things start to get…strange. First, there are the huge lapses in Belaynesh’s memory and sense of place and time. Perhaps more alarming, she realizes that every morning when she wakes up, she begins the same day again: September 10, 2007, which also happens to be the last day of the Ethiopian calendar year. Or, more to the point, the day before the world is set to end.
Enter Teret, a talking parrot who reveals an ambitious plan to un-stick time, sending him and Belaynesh deep into the world of Ethiopian mythology. At its center is the star of the apocryphal Book of Enoch, the mysterious Henok, who’s none too happy at the many ways Belaynesh’s arrival on this strange, surreal scene has disrupted the book he’s dedicated his life to composing. As Belaynesh and Teret dodge contemporary reinventions of the book’s grandest flourishes, from fallen angels to time traveling giants, and even Henok himself, Belaynesh learns that sometimes moving forward requires looking back.
Irreverently funny and wildly inventive, Teret Teret is modern magical realism at its best. It blends some of Ethiopia’s oldest stories with a heroine for our current moment, for a mold-breaking, epic tale about identity, love, and writing new stories when the old ones don’t serve us anymore.

ABOUT THE BOOK
An essential exploration of the overlooked impact of disordered eating among Black women—and a prescriptive road map to returning to peace and wholeness within our bodies, from the clinical therapist who founded Black and Embodied Counseling and Consulting PLLC
Food has always been a political tool for the oppressor. And the body, especially the Black body, has always been one of its many battlegrounds.
Licensed mental health therapist, somatic healer, and eating disorder specialist Alishia McCullough understands that for far too many Black women, the myriad effects of racial trauma have disrupted their most essential relationship: the one they have with their bodies—and by extension, with their food. African Americans are disproportionately impacted by disordered eating behaviors, yet their experiences are frequently overlooked by doctors and mental health experts. As a result, entire communities—our most vulnerable communities—are forced to navigate systems that are already primed to dismiss their needs, leaving them without proper care, or often even the language they need to identify what’s wrong.
McCullough’s groundbreaking work radically validates the lived experiences and generational traumas of BIPOC communities. As part of a steadily growing movement among clinicians to “decolonize therapy,” McCullough rejects the patriarchal, white supremacist mindset that has dominated the field, and instead embraces a more integrated approach that seeks to understand disordered eating patterns by examining the psychological wounds left by centuries of racism.
Weaving together crucial history, compelling client stories, guided practice, and McCullough’s own experiences with disordered eating behaviors, Reclaiming the Black Body is a revealing, potentially life-saving book that illuminates the way home, back to the safety and comfort found within our bodies.ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In Search of Our Mothers' Garden
In Search of Our Mothers' Garden
by Alice Walker
Sold outA new edition of the groundbreaking classic essay collection from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Color Purple in which she coins the term “womanist” as she speaks out as a Black woman, a writer, a mother, and a feminist on topics ranging from the personal to the political
“When I graduated from college as an undergraduate, my father gave me Alice Walker’s In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens. It was a beaten-up paperback in 1999, and it’s even more battered now.” —Jesmyn Ward, in the New York Times Book Review
“Womanist is to feminist as purple is to lavender.”
Originally published forty years ago, Alice Walker’s first collection of nonfiction is a dazzling compendium that remains both timely and relevant. In these thirty-six essays, Walker contemplates her own work and that of other writers, considers the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the anti-nuclear movement of the 1980s, and writes vividly and courageously about a scarring childhood injury. Throughout, Walker explores the theories and practices of feminists and feminism, incorporating what she calls the “womanist” tradition of black women—insights that are vital to understanding our lives and society today.

About the Book
As a little boy grows into a bigger boy, ready to take on the world, he first must have that very difficult conversation far too familiar to so many Black Americans on how to live in a world where racism is ready to take on YOU....
Most Black and Brown children are given some form of The Talk, but it's not the easiest subject to broach. This book, gently and with unexpected humor, offers parents a way into this all too necessary conversation. The Talk isn't all gloom and worry. It shows Black children enjoying life, and that they are deserve to gather in big groups, laugh too loudly, run as fast as they can, and to live freely like the kids that they are.
It's just as vital that kids who aren't given The Talk, or aren't aware of it, BECOME aware of it, become aware of what others have to contend with, because you can't make a change without knowing what needs changing.About the Author

Monument Eternal
Monument Eternal
Sold outThe long-awaited reissue of Alice Coltrane’s original spiritual teachings and reflections, which provide powerful insight into her transcendent music, cherished by millions across the globe
ALICE COLTRANE (1937–2007) was a composer, master of various musical instruments, improviser, spiritual leader, and wife of John Coltrane. Throughout her adult life, she worked within and combined a broad range of musical genres, including gospel, R&B, bebop, free jazz, Indian devotional song, and Western art music. She recorded more than twenty full-length albums for Impulse and Warner Bros. Her music speaks to her experiences as a child playing for church congregations in Detroit; the transcendent and mind-bending avant-garde improvisations she performed with her husband John Coltrane; and her religious pilgrimages to India.
When Monument Eternal was originally published in 1977, Alice Coltrane was living in Southern California and had recently become a swami, building and nurturing an alternative spiritual community. In these pages, she says that the book is “based upon the soul’s realizations in Absolute Consciousness and its spiritual relationships with the Supreme One.” Monument Eternal offers deep insight into Coltrane’s tremendous musical output, and shines a light on her transformation from Alice McLeod, Detroit church organist and bebopper, to sage thought leader Swami Turiyasangitananda. It also reflects the extraordinary fluidity of American religious customs in the mid and late twentieth century.
Akashic’s long-awaited reissue of Monument Eternal includes a new foreword by Ashley Kahn.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Texas Ranger Darren Mathews isn’t sure he’s been a good cop, but believes he’s got a shot at being a good man—if he manages to dodge the potential indictment hanging over his head and if he, from here on out, pledges allegiance to the truth. It’s a virtue the country appears to have wholly lost its grip on, but one Darren sees as his salvation. He is in the midst of remaking his life with the woman he loves, hoping for the peace of country living at his beloved farmhouse, when he is visited by someone who couldn’t hold the truth on her tongue if it was dipped in sugar, a woman who’s always been bent of tearing his life apart. His mother. Armed with a tall tale about a missing Black college student, Sera (whose white sorority sisters insist she isn’t missing at all). Darren must decide if his can trust his mother is telling the truth—and what her ulterior motive may be, and what if that motive has to do with a grand jury deciding his fate.
Darren gets his hooks into the investigation, along the way discovering things about Sera’s family and her hometown that are odd at best, vaguely sinister at worst. Hamstrung by local law enforcement and the Texas Rangers who likewise doubt the account of a missing girl, if Darren wants answers, he’ll need help from the person whom he swore to never trust again—his mother.
In this emotionally stirring conclusion to the singular Highway 59 series, set three years after the events of Heaven, My Home, Darren reckons with his life’s purpose as he’s forced to choose between his own peace and the higher call to do good.ABOUT THE AUTHOR
